Mercedes-AMG celebrates its 55th birthday by building 5 non-homologated GT3 race cars
55 years ago, AMG began operating on the world’s race tracks and now celebrates that history with a new very limited edition vehicle: the Mercedes-AMG GT3 EDITION 55.
Only five of these hand-built cars will leave the AMG factory in Affalterbach, and the new model is based on the Mercedes-AMG GT3 race car. Mercedes-AMG, however, has not bothered to get FIA homologation.
That means the car can’t compete in FIA events, but it also means Mercedes-AMG hasn’t had to limit its car to meet race rules. As a result of the decision, the 6.3-liter V8 will generate 650 hp (685 kW/659 PS), 100 hp (75 kW/101 PS) more than the standard GT3 race car. Mercedes has also modified the Inconel exhaust system. Now free of its muffler, there are even fewer obstacles between the driver and the sound of AMG’s V8 engine.

The body, meanwhile, is finished in MANUFAKTUR’s uni alpine gray with red accents that complement the body color and the matte finish of aerodynamic components such as the front and rear diffusers, rear spoiler, grilles, grille radiator and side skirts. , whose carbon fiber fabric is left exposed.
In addition to the red details, the Affalterbach crest has also been painted on the side of the car. Meanwhile, alongside the AMG logo, a 55-year anniversary symbol has been added to the rear wing to really mark this special edition from the rest of the pack.
Inside, the manufacturer’s mark has also been added. The seats, for example, are embroidered with the anniversary symbol and “55 EDITION – 1 OF 5” plaques are mounted on the center console. Meanwhile, the seat belts have silver accents to honor Germany’s racing history.
Behind the wheel is a high-resolution Bosch DDU 11 display that shows important information such as engine speed, operating temperatures, lap times and gear. When the car is started, the 55th anniversary logo is displayed on the screen.
Finally, the five lucky buyers of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 EDITION 55 will also get an equally special watch from IWC Schaffhausen. The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition AMG is made from grade 5 titanium and is engraved with the chassis number of the owner’s racing car on the back.
Naturally, the limited edition model isn’t cheap: the Mercedes-AMG GT3 EDITION 55 will cost €625,000 ($624,025 at current exchange rates).
